Meditation of Cardinal Prospero Grech OSA to Cardinals Gathered in Conclave

Image result for prospero grech bendict xvi

It's a sad end to the year 2019, with the death of Cardinal Prospero Grech OSA that was announced yesterday. Some years ago, this Blog had posted an article about this eminent son of Malta. Today, we post his meditation to the Cardinals delivered before the election of Francis as Pope. As far as we know, this is the first time that this meditation is being published on a Maltese website. We thank the former President of Pro Tridentina (Malta), Godwin Xuereb, who corresponded with the late Cardinal, who found this meditation for this Blog. This meditation remains valid, perhaps even more, than when it was delivered to the Cardinals.

Count Neri Capponi, R.I.P.

Count Neri Capponi, second from the left, photo dated 2001 (Source: Controrivoluzione)
Count Neri Capponi, a prominent Florentine legal scholar and canonist, and one of the great traditional Catholic personalities, died on 13 December 2018 in Florence, Italy. Count Capponi taught for many decades at the University of Florence. He also served on the marriage tribunal of the Archdiocese of the same city and was recognized as a canon lawyer with the credentials to speak before the Roman Rota. Neri Capponi was also a Vice-President of the FIUV and was also Honorary President of the same Federation for many years. He also corresponded with the former President of Pro Tridentina (Malta).

Capponi was known for having defended the right of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre to continue his apostolate without being labelled schismatic.

“You cannot apply the standards of the new code of canon law and the mentality of the old code. According to the new code, Lefebvre could do what he did with a Catholic intention, and he did what he did in ‘sincerity’ and invoked the ‘state of emergency’ argument, which the new code permits. You might not like the new code, but it’s what governs the Church.”
Neri Capponi was also very much in favour of Summorum Pontificum. He considered the post-Vatican II period as a time of crisis:
"When asked why I believe the crisis we now face is worse than Arianism, I give these reasons: (a) The principal vehicle of the faith, the liturgy, was untouched by the Arian crisis; (b) whereas the Arian crisis was precipitated and sustained by the intervention of secular power, the post Vatican II crisis comes from within the Church and is therefore more difficult to fight; (c) in the fourth century, Pope Liberius finally signed the excommunication of St. Athanasius under duress—in the twentieth century Pope Paul VI was admittedly taken in and hoodwinked by his misguided optimism, but there was no duress; (d) the present crisis is not only one of faith but of morals as well. In addition, today not only one dogma, albeit a very important one, is denied as with Arianism, but all dogmas, be it even the existence of a personal God!" Times of Crisis, Times for Faith, lecture delivered in 1995.

In memoriam: Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos

See the source image

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Cardinal Dario Castrillón Hoyos, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Clergy, who died on 18 May 2018.  The Cardinal was a personal friend of former Pro Tridentina (Malta), Godwin Xuereb. The two had also met in 2011 and discussed the then situation of the traditional liturgy in Malta.

Below is a ZENIT translation of the telegram sent by Pope Francis.

H.E. Lord Cardinal Angelo Sodano
Dean of the College of Cardinals
Vatican City

I learnt the news of the demise of dear Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, and I wish to express my sentiments of condolence to the College of Cardinals, to the relatives and to those who esteemed the late Cardinal, remembering with a grateful spirit his generous service to the Church, especially his precious service given to the Holy See, particularly as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy and President of the Ecclesia Dei Pontifical Commission, and I raise fervent intercessory prayers to the Lord so that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, He will receive him in eternal joy and peace, and I send the Apostolic Blessing to all those who share the grief over the death of such a meritorious servant of the Gospel.

Franciscus PP.

President: Felipe Alanís Suárez  (Una Voce México)

President d'Honneur: Jacques Dhaussy (Una Voce France)

Vice Presidents: Patrick Banken (Una Voce France) and Jack Oostveen (Ecclesia Dei Delft, The Netherlands)

Secretary: Joseph Shaw (Latin Mass Society, England and Wales)
Treasurer: Monika Rheinschmitt (Pro Missa Tridentina, Germany)

Councillors:
Oleg-Michael Martynov (Una Voce Russia)

Andris Amolins (Una Voce Latvija)
Eduardo Colón (Una Voce Puerto Rico)
Fabio Marino (Una Voce Italia)
Egons Morales Piña (Una Voce Casablanca, Chile)

Once again, Pro Tridentina (Malta) was not in a position to attend or nominate a candidate for the Council. Unfortunately, the current situation in the organisation does not help. There was one Maltese FIUV Councillor, former Pro Tridentina (Malta) President Godwin Xuereb, who served between November 2009 - January 2012 and December 2012 - October 2015. In 2013 the same Councillor was also Assistant Treasurer of the FIUV.

Dr. Helmut Rückriegel R.I.P.

Dr. Helmut Rückriegel (right) during a meeting with Benedict XVI.

His Excellency Dr. Helmut Rückriegel, one of the elder statesmen of the International Federation Una Voce (FIUV), a personal friend of former Pro Tridentina (Malta) President Godwin Xuereb, and a great champion of tradition over many decades, died early on 25th of January, 2016.

Dr. Rückriegel has been actively involved in the Una Voce movement since 1967. He was head of Una Voce Deutschland in 1992–2005, member of the FIUV Council, and later one of the Federation’s Presidents d’honneur.

--------------------------

Obituary

Dr. Helmut Rückriegel, an important and highly meritorious upholder for the traditional Latin liturgy has left us.

Born on the 20th of November 1925 in Niedergründau, close to Hanau, he spent the days of his philological studies in Marburg, with whose university he remained in close contact for all his life. Having achieved a doctorate (Dr. Phil) he was a lecturer for ancient European languages in Manchester prior to being employed as from 1956 by Germany’s Foreign Service. His first assignment there was the post of an attaché at the German embassy in London. Following further postings as chargé d’affaires in Israel and with the German Information Center in New York between 1979 and 1984 he ran the personal office and worked as head of protocol of the German Federal President Dr. Karl Carstens. Following that he officiated as German ambassador to Thailand until 1988 and until his retirement in 1990 as German ambassador to Ireland.

In November 1980 he was a member of the diplomatic team which greeted Pope John Paul II on his first visit to Germany. As they waited for the Pope’s aeroplane to land he found himself standing next to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and they began conversing. This led to a friendship that endured until his death.

Already fascinated by the Catholic Church from an early age as a youth he converted to Catholicism. This association post the liturgical reforms brought about by the Second Vatican Council resulted in his exemplary and incessant engagement towards the preservation and restoration of the traditional Latin liturgy and Gregorian chant. Thus, from 1992 to 2006, he occupied the position of President of Una Voce Germany. During that period he led the association and its publication, the Una-Voce-Korrespondenz, to a renewed flourishing.

A further passion of his, besides his love of literature and poetry (he knew innumerable German poems by heart) was that for old English and Irish roses which he planted and cultivated at his 3,000 sqm property in Niedergründau. This rose garden was renowned amongst the friends of roses and every year was the destination of a great number of tourists. Following a long illness, during the night leading to the 25th of January 2016, Helmut Rückriegel passed away. His perseverance and his extraordinary merits for the traditional Catholic liturgy shall remain unforgotten.

Dr. Johann von Behr, deputy president Una Voce Deutschland e.V.

This time round, for a number of reasons, Pro Tridentina (Malta), a member of the FIUV, did not nominate a person for the Council. This brings to an end therefore the mandate of Godwin Xuereb, who served as a Councillor for the period 2009 - 2012 and 2012 - 2015.

The Papacy of John Paul I - a return to Tradition?

http://www.collevalenza.it/Riviste/2003/Riv0903/Papa_Luciani.jpg
Pope John Paul I - a friend of Tradition
On the 37th anniversary of the election of Cardinal Albino Luciani as Pope (26 August 1978), we felt it is appropriate to honour the memory of this Pontiff who reigned for just 33 days by sharing the following:

In a past article the former Pro Tridentina (Malta) President, Godwin Xuereb, had indicated that Pope John Paul I was in favour of the Tridentine Mass. His article was picked up by other blogs, although some twisted it to fit their agenda.

It is interesting that, a couple of years later,  the Catholic Traditionalist Movement confirmed, in essence, what that article had claimed (without acknowledging the source). In its article dated September 2013, Father Gommar De Pauw was quoted as follows:

“Well, I tell you one thing, if he had remained Pope, you wouldn’t have me here at the Chapel because with that beautiful official letter signed by the Secretary of State, also came an unofficial message that I better start packing my suitcase, that there was a job waiting for me in Rome, in the Vatican, to help Pope John Paul I bring the Truth back to the Church. Well, it wasn’t to be and the Lord, Who knows what He does, obviously wanted me to be in this Chapel … what was I going to do in Rome? Well let’s just forget it …”

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/CqVBg7Q0oWw/hqdefault.jpg
Fr Gommar De Pauw
This implies that Pope John Paul I was not going to “tolerate”, so to speak, traditionalist Catholics, but rather change course so that the abuses in the liturgy would be stopped, and Fr De Pauw was going to be his right-hand man in achieving this.

The same article claims that Cardinal Ottaviani (famous for the "Ottaviani Intervention") considered Cardinal Luciani as the second best choice for a traditionalist candidate for the Papacy, second only to Cardinal Pericle Felici.
What the former President of Pro Tridentina (Malta) had said was proven right - albeit at the time many in traditional Catholic circles, in particular from the Veneto region, had remained perplexed at his revelation.

FFI News: Fr Volpi is dead

http://airmaria.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/web-Father-Fidenzio-Volpi-03.jpg
The late Fr Volpi (left) during an audience with Pope Francis

The Institute of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate announces with deep sorrow the death of the Apostolic Commissary Father Fidenzio Volpi OFM Cap, which occurred on Sunday, June 7, 2015.

Fr. Volpi’s death follows a period of ill health resulting from a stroke on April 29th.

He died peacefully in the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he was lovingly assisted by medical personnel, relatives and confreres.

In this time of great sadness, our Institute joins in the sorrow of the Capuchin Order and the entire Franciscan Family; in that of the Italian Conference of Major Superiors, which was led by Father Volpi for over twenty years; and, of course, with that of his earthly family.

On the day when the Church celebrated Corpus Domini, Fr. Volpi passed to the Father’s House. Like the grain of wheat that dies in the ground, we are sure that his sacrifice will bring a plentiful harvest of spiritual fruit.

Confreres and the faithful can pay their last respects to the Apostolic Commissioner at his funeral on Wednesday, June 10, at 10 am, at the Basilica of San Lorenzo al Verano in Rome.

Father Alfonso M. Bruno

General Secretary

Rome, June 8, 2015

Pro Tridentina (Malta) comment: Fr Volpi had been selected by Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz to oversee the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate after Pope Francis decided to to insist on the use of the Novus Ordo in that religious community because of internal dissension, and not because of any negative judgment on the traditional liturgy. Volpi’s leadership resulted alas in the virtual destruction of the order (see Official Note from FFI)

The death of Fr Volpi, (remember him in your prayers) might have an effect on the Tridentine Mass in Malta. As a matter of fact, former Pro Tridentina (Malta) President, Mr Godwin Xuereb, had initiated talks with the FFI and discussions were ongoing. These discussions came to an end following developments in the FFI.

Felipe Alanis Suarez (Una Voce Mexico)

Rodolfo Vargas Rubio (Roma Aeterna, Spain)
Godwin Xuereb (Pro Tridentina, Malta)

Co-opted Councillors:
Oleg-Michael Martynov  (Una Voce Russia)
Matthew Schellhorn (The Latin Mass Society)

The first comments:

“I met Pope Francis very recently and he told me that he has no problem with the old rite, and neither does he have any problem with lay groups and associations like yours that promote it,” Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos told members of Una Voce International (FIUV), who were in Rome for a general assembly.

Responding to questions from FIUV members about tensions within the Friars of the Immaculate, the Colombian cardinal said that the Pope moved to insist on the use of the Novus Ordo in that religious community only because of internal dissension, and not because of any negative judgment on the traditional liturgy.

“We are very grateful to His Eminence Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, His Eminence Cardinal Brandmüller, and to Archbishop Pozzo for taking part in our General Assembly of the International Federation Una Voce,” James Bogle, a lawyer, author, and chairman of the Catholic Union of Great Britain, said in a brief statement to CWN.

“We are very pleased with the way the celebration of the traditional Mass is now going worldwide. We are obviously very grateful to Benedict XVI and also our present Pope Francis for all the support that they have given us in our right to worship in the traditional Roman rite.”

Goodbye ...

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcXO4EcnDhbEUI9y2WwBGNF1pi_pQwlTgu6rdKY9Re7ib924r7w-p-NcOyhNtBq6A4y0geMR6h1ChrDx6VDwkNaJFcNR7u82qlUUI_MvxHQ1yDXGW-luwhYsRxmwbBs1iKDfx8Nh5sOrg/s1600/LatinMass.gif

The past weeks I tried, with the help of some other dedicated people, to somehow revive the group Pro Tridentina (Malta) as I was told that it was not functioning at all. Some attempts have been made - including reactivating this Blog and the Facebook group -  but regrettably I found no tangible effort to really set the ball running.

On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the founding of Pro Tridentina (Malta), the time has come to turn over a new page. I still believe in the aims of this group but armchair critics and Masses organised against the letter of Summorum Pontificum and Universae Ecclesiae will lead to nowhere.

Another problem is the fact that many people, including priests, like to have their own little niche, celebrate Tridentine Mass for the selected few, and refuse outright to co-operate or communicate with Pro Tridentina (Malta) - these things are simply not on and I outright refuse to be part of this division.

If, and I stress if, a well functioning committee is one day set up, then I might join once more. In the meantime, I continue my work in a project initiated by the Holy See that is giving me great satisfaction.

This being my last message, I would like to thank those who genuinely helped and ... Goodbye.

Kontra r-Rit Tridentin?

http://maltaseminary.org/sem_2008/03_about_us/rector.jpg
Ir-Rettur tas-Seminarju, Rev. Jimmy Bonnici
IL-ĠENSILLUM tal-21 ta' Awwissu 2010 kien hemm artiklu inkwetanti. Nikkwotaw:

"Ir-Rettur tas-Seminarju, Fr Jimmy Bonnici, irrikonoxxa li fost seminaristi Maltin, l-istess bħal f’pajjiżi oħra, jeżisti r-riskju ‘perikoluż’ tal-klerikaliżmu u sostna li kemm il-klerikaliżmu kif ukoll l-antiteżi tiegħu fejn seminaristi “jinħbew wara l-kunċett ta’ tolleranza u jgħixu reliġjon privata” huma ‘inkwetanti’.

Numru ta’ qarrejja ta’ IL-ĠENSILLUM online fil-ġimgħat li għaddew avviċinaw lil din il-gazzetta diġitali dwar elementi ta’ ‘neo-klerikaliżmu’ fost saċerdoti ordnati dan l-aħħar, kemm fl-ilbies tagħhom kif ukoll fil-mod kif iċċelebraw il-Prima Messa tagħhom."

Ir-reazzjoni ta' Pro Tridentina (Malta) ġiet ippublikata ġimgħa wara.

28 ta'Awwissu 2010

Sur Editur,

Nagħmel riferenza għall-artiklu “Ir-riskju ta' klerikaliżmu hu perikoluż” li deher fuq IL-ĠENSILLUM online tal-21 ta' Awwissu 2010. Personalment, hawn Malta nattendi l-quddiesa kemm bir-Rit skond il-Missal ta' Pawlu VI kif ukoll bir-Rit Tridentin minn saċerdoti li jqaddsu biż-żewġ forom. Ħassibni ħafna l-fatt li r-Rettur tas-Seminarju ta x'jifhem li huwa kontra r-Rit Tridentin. Tajjeb niftakru li:

"Ma hemm ebda kontradizzjoni bejn l-edizzjoni u l-oħra tal-Missal Ruman. Fil-ġrajja tal-Liturġija hemm tkabbir u progress, imma ebda qtugħ. Dak li għall-ġenerazzjonijiet ta’ qabel kien qaddis, jibqa’ qaddis u kbir anki għalina, u ma jistax f’daqqa waħda jkun għal kollox ipprojbit, jew saħansitra magħdud bħala ta’ ħsara. Ikun ta’ ġid għalina lkoll li nippreservaw ir-rikkezzi li xxettlu fil-fidi u fit-talb tal-Knisja, u li nagħtuhom il-post li jixirqilhom. Tabilħaqq, biex jgħixu għaqda sħiħa, anki s-saċerdoti tal-komunitajiet li huma marbutin mal-forma l-qadima ma jistgħux, bi prinċipju, jeskludu ċ-ċelebrazzjoni skond il-kotba l-ġodda. L-esklużjoni totali tar-rit il-ġdid ma tkunx għalhekk konsistenti mal-aċċettazzjoni tal-valur u l-qdusija tiegħu."

Dan il-kliem mhux jien qed ngħidu imma huwa mislut mill-ittra li l-Papa Benedittu XVI, bagħat lill-Isqfijiet madwar id-dinja biex jispjega aħjar ir-raġunijiet li wassluh biex jippromulga l-Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum.

Tkun ħasra, għalhekk, jekk f'Malta nidhru li aħna kontra r-Rit Tridentin. Għal aktar informazzjoni wieħed jista' jidħol fis-sit:
